FAQ
Common questions about the check
How do I know if I am entitled to EU261 compensation?
You are entitled to compensation if your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before departure (unless you were offered a replacement flight at similar times), arrived at its destination 3 hours or more late, or you were denied boarding against your will, and the airline cannot show extraordinary circumstances. The calculator asks for the type of disruption, the flight distance and, depending on the case, the length of the delay or how much notice you were given of the cancellation.
How much compensation can I get for my flight?
Regulation (EC) 261/2004 sets €250 per passenger for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 for flights within the EU over 1,500 km and for other flights of 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 for flights over 3,500 km that are not within the EU. If you reach your destination between 3 and 4 hours late on a flight over 3,500 km (for example, because the airline rebooked you on another flight), the amount is reduced by 50% to €300. The amount does not depend on the ticket price and is paid per passenger: a family of four can receive up to €2,400.
Does EU261 apply to my flight?
EU261 applies to every flight departing from an airport in the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, whatever the airline, and to flights arriving there if a European airline operates them. For example, a New York–Madrid flight is covered if Iberia operates it, but not if a US airline does. Extraordinary circumstances, such as a storm or an air traffic control strike, exempt the airline from paying compensation, but not from providing meals, refreshments and, if needed, accommodation.
How long do I have to claim?
In Spain, the generally accepted time limit for an EU261 compensation claim is 5 years from the flight date, under Article 1964 of the Spanish Civil Code. In other countries the limit is set by national law and may be shorter.
